Ark City honored for fluoridation

In 2016, the Arkansas City City Commissionwas recognized for its decision to continue water fluoridation. This decision was based on evidence of its benefits in reducing tooth decay at a low cost. Statistics presented by Dr. Nick Rogers showed that childhood dental decay rates were lower in Arkansas city compared to nearby Winfield, which does not fluoridate its water. The city is nearing its 50th anniversary of community water fluoridation, reinforcing its commitment to public oral health.

A Kansas town narrowly resolved a battle over fluoride in their water

In April 2024, the Abilene City Commission voted to stop fluoridating the city's water after more than 25 years. Concerned about the health impact, local dentist Dr. Beatrice Brittan, took action. She met with City Commissioners and emphasized the importance of fluoridation in preventing tooth decay, particularly for children and vulnerable residents without easy access to dental care. Her advocacy highlighted the long-term negative health consequences of removing fluoride. As a result of her efforts, the Commission reversed its decision by a narrow 3-2 vote just a month later.
